Bitcoin Weekend Liquidity Gaps & Institutional Order Routing
Last updated 22 10 月 2026
Evaluating spread expansions and latency node routing across major global exchanges.
Weekend bitcoin has a structural liquidity problem that every weekend-only trader eventually discovers. The visible volume in the order book is misleading because it is not where the executable size sits.
Where the liquidity actually is
During weekdays, substantial size rests on regulated venues with institutional market makers. On weekends those venues close, leaving fragmented liquidity across unregulated venues and OTC desks. The quoted book can look deep while the executable book is very shallow.
The practical consequence
Roughly 1–3% adverse movement on a market order is normal at a weekend session open, and considerably worse is possible around a weekend gap. Any size that would be safe on a weekday can be dangerous simply because of when it was opened.
Mitigation approaches
- Reduce weekend size to the level where a full gap remains survivable.
- Use limit orders exclusively; market orders into weekend books are the primary source of loss.
- Route to venues with genuine weekend liquidity where the platform supports it.
What to check on your broker
The relevant question is not whether the broker offers crypto CFDs, but whether their crypto pricing references the spot market or an index of venues, and what their execution policy is during weekend gaps. Ask specifically — the answer is usually not published.
